Wartime Footing and Supporting the Troops
USA Today carried an interesting article by John D. Solomon beckoning American's to do more to support the "war effort." In the article he expresses how the sentiments of "Supporting the Troops" is very nice, but that we as American's need to do more. I know personally how much many of you out there are doing to show your support and boost the morale of the soldier's over here, I've received the cards and e-mails and care packages. Mr. Solomon argues for more however, stating:
There are individual and private groups organizing efforts to support the troops in a variety of ways. A Defense Department Web site has a list of opportunities for Americans to get involved.
To be sure, the war on terrorism may not require the societal mobilization that occurred on the home front during World War II. However, Americans should and would be willing to do more.
As part of the first 100 days of his second term, Bush should enlist the country in projects of common national purpose. For example, there has been little progress made on conserving energy to reduce reliance on Middle East oil.
Further, six in 10 Americans say they are willing to volunteer for U.S. homeland security efforts, including civil-defense planning, training and drilling in their communities, according to a survey by the Council on Excellence in Government. But they have to be asked.
I also came across this message today on a great way to support those soldiers who have been wounded. RealClearPolitics posted this message today:
The number ONE request at Walter Reed hospital is phone cards.
The government doesn't pay long distance phone charges and these wounded soldiers are rationing their calls home. Many will be there throughout the holidays.
Really support our troops --Send phone cards of any amount to:
Medical Family Assistance Center
Walter Reed Medical Center
900 Georgia Avenue,
NW Washington, DC 20307-5001
They say they need an "endless" supply of these -- any amount even $5 is greatly appreciated.
The link for 'Defense Department Website' should be http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/2002/b12122002_bt632-02.html
Just a little glitch in the link. FYI.
Thanks for all that you do.

My brother is in Iraq and I know how the phone card thing goes. We have organized fundraisers to buy them, and we have alot of cards. Thanks for making us aware of the phone card issue at Walter Reed. We will be sending some cards for the holidays.
